Founded in the 1970’s we were firstly known as Mac Quarrie Netball Club. Our Founder Jean Wood (nee Hauraki) represented Otago in Basketball and would have represented New Zealand had she not broken her ankle.
Moving from Central Otago to Auckland with her family, Jean decided to encourage her sisters, sister inlaws and young nieces into sport. She began with House Wives Netball and Basketball during the week, and finally playing on a Saturday in Papakura at Smiths Ave.
Having no funds for uniforms, Jean made her own and so began the “wrap around netball skirt” (a huge claim to fame). After one season at Papakura we moved to Manurewa when the new complex opened with our new name Aztec (named after the chocolate not the chips).
Aztec Netball Club grew to include Premier, Senior and Junior teams. No longer just a family club, Aztec went through some changes including a change to our name. In the 90’s we became known as Aztec Sports Club providing opportunities for members to play Touch (Mixed, Ladies and Juniors) in the summer season. Aztec Touch teams played in Ardmore, Weymouth and Manurewa modules.
In the late 90’s and looking for a new challenge, our netball teams returned to Papakura Netball Centre after winning the Premier grade and uniform awards at Manurewa.
Although Jean has been gone for many years, her passion for sport and her love of family remain. Over the years we have seen many club members come and go. High profile representative players succeed and reach their potential time and time again, both in Netball and Touch. Some even taking up the challenge at Management and Umpiring levels. Honorary and founding member Linda Hauraki, to this day remains a Senior Umpire and chef extraordinare at the annual Aztec Sports Club Team Building weekend. Linda took the court for the first time in Aztec uniform, in 1975.
Jeans legacy lives on in her daughter, grandchildren, sister, brother, sister in law, nieces and nephews who continue to believe in “Sport as an Incentive” and encourage other families to join us in creating a whanau based sporting environment.
