We were defeated 34-59 when we met just two weeks ago, so it was a confident Bombay team that took the court tonight against us. We had set our own goals for the match and that was to score 9 goals and 3 intercepts in each quarter. Bombay broke our 2nd centre pass so pulled ahead by 2 straight away. Another two breaks had Aztec trailing by 5 goals before we settled into the match. Two crucial intercepts at the defensive end and some confident shooting at the other allowed Aztec to halt the momentum by Bombay and Aztec managed to stay within the 5 goal gap established in the first half of this quarter. Ending the first period of play 10-15 and achieving our own targets.
The second quarter saw no changes to the Aztec line up but we squandered possession and were unable to score from our own centre pass 3 times in succession which enabled Bombay to increase their lead to 10 before we settled and scored goal for goal. Lendrum called time with a few minutes to go in the quarter and Paea came on at WD. The second quarter was 2 to 1 to Bombay 8-16 and the lead had increased to 13 at the half time whistle. We let ourselves down and were just under our own target scoring only 8 this quarter, but we did get 3 intercepts. Half time score: 18 - 31 Bombay
The same 7 that left the court returned to start the second half and scored the first two goals. The pace increased and a goal was being scored every 30 seconds at each end of the court. We struggled to contain the Bombay shooting duo but were managing to score from our own centre passes on most occassions. We were pleased to have exceeded our team target for this quarter scoring 14. However an extra break by Bombay gave them a win in this quarter too and they increased the lead by 2 with a score of 32 - 47 to Bombay.
Lendrum replaced Warren at GD and Aztec were confident going onto the court. Despite tight tough defence by Bombay, Bilton and Inkster had been working hard and accurately throughout the match which lifted the team going into the final quarter. 2 for 2 when Bombay called time. Aztec were unaffected by the stop in play and managed to dominate the next 14 minutes winning this quarter by 4 goals 16-12 and reducing the gap to 11. Paea, Spence, Bilton and White all achieved intercepts and Lendrum was tightly marking the GA making Bombay change their pace. Confident quick release of the ball into the shooters by Page and White saw a slick full team improved performance to end the game well. Final Score: 48 - 59 to Bombay.
