A fast paced game from the first whistle as Aztec and Hawks contested every pass.  It was goal for goal after the first 6 passes with Page settling into the Centre position as White was on the bench through injury at training.  She combined  well with Hemi and Bremner in the mid-court and there was some excellent use of possession.  Lendrum and Spence were putting pressure on the Hawk shooters and making it hard for them and the accuracy of Bilton and Inkster allowed Aztec to pull ahead to a 3 goal lead in front 8-5 when Bremner called injury time.  She was able to stay on after ice was applied to her calves .  The stop in play however allowed Mangere to take advantage of the halt in momentum and they scored the next 3 goals before Aztec settled again to draw even.  The quarter finished with Aztec in front by 2.

Bremner went to the bench to be replaced by Paea at WA, no other changes to Aztec’s line-up.  After 4 passes a collision resulted in Hemi calling time and requiring treatment to her wrist.  She was able to continue on the court and the game recommenced with the same gap.  Everyone was hunting and both shooters and 2 defenders gathered in 4 intercepts between them.  Aztec pulled ahead to a 4 goal lead but Hawks settled into the match and managed to break their centre pass and close the gap.  Another 2 breaks closed the gap and let Hawks pull in front.  The half time score had Aztec behind by 1.

After 5 centre passes the game was again tied up then Hawks made a crucial break and pull ahead by 3.  A heavy fall by Lendrum at the defensive end resulted in her having to leave the court with an injured ankle.  Warren came on at GD.  Aztec lost momentum and the new combinations didn’t work.  Hawks took advantage scoring from every opportunity presented to them.  Aztec squandered possession and the quarter became a 3 to 1 game in the 2nd half of this disappointing quarter.  Aztec had scored 8 to Hawks 20.

Warren and Spence swapped bibs.  Aztec were successful intercepting 6 passes in this 15 minutes and Inkster scored 9 from 9.  Bilton injured her thumb at the end of the match.  A much better period of play than the previous 15 and more in line with the first half.  the final quarter was only a 4 goal difference to Hawks.
A disspointing result as the girls played skilful netball throughout the majority of the match with passion and commitment .  It’s a shame that Lendrum will be out for the rest of the season after a solid first half.  We have 2 hours of netball left for 2012 and we hope to finish without any more injuries.
