Last grading game and we were up against the team at the top of the table.
Weather was wet, windy and cold and we started slow allowing Rewa to score 6 from the first 8 centre passes.  It’s never fun to trail from the start and our defensive end was receiving alot of whistle giving free shots to the opposition.  Accuracy was down at our shooting end as both Otene and Page struggled to find the hoop under strong pressure from the Rewa defence and the heavy rain.  The first quarter ended with Rewa in a dominating position 6 goals in front.  First quarter Score 5 - 11 Manurewa Rugby

OMalley came on at GA and Beazley-Tango at GK.  Handling errors at the attacking end squandered possession that had been turned over by our defenders and Rewa took advantage by increasing their lead by another 6 points to 12.  Half time score 10-22 to Manurewa Rugby.

Bilton was moved to the shooting end and Spence brought back on at GD, Page came on at WA and Lendrum at WD.  The rain got heavier and Aztec got more determined.  Bilton was outstanding in the shooting circle scoring 6 in a row after the 1st 2 centre passes.  Aztec could see an unexpected chance and consolidated their efforts with very few unforced errors and effective shooting.  The 3rd quarter was a reversal of the previous 2 with Aztec winning by 6 reducing the gap by the same amount.  23-29 to Manurewa Rugby.

No changes going into the final quarter, including no change to the heavy rain.  Bilton continued to dominate in the shooting end.  Spence and Beazley-Tango worked extremely hard in the defensive circle and Lendrum was effective putting more pressure on the feeds.  White and Page were fast to the circle edge and their feeding was strong and accurate throughout.  Otene and Bilton communicated with each other effectively creating space and opportunities to shoot.  It was a nail-biting final minute as Aztec closed the gap to 1 and had the ball in their shooting circle with seconds to go.  The game ended with a 1 goal advantage to Manurewa Rugby.  Third quarter Score:  35 - 36 Manurewa Rugby

Great to see the girls lift their game and contest till the end it was only seconds of netball that made the difference between a loss and a draw.  We look forward to the Presidents round commencing in a few weeks.

MATCH:                      Aztec 2            v            Ardmore 1

DATE:                         Wednesday 21/3/12

RESULT:                     50 - 46 Aztec

TEAM:
Alison White, Ariana Page, Chelsea Bilton, Josephine Otene, Luana Beazley-Tango, Ngamira Warren, Nicola O’Malley, Sara Lendrum, Sarah Inkster, Shaiann Hemi,Tracey Spence

COACH:           Wendy Bremner                                     MANAGER:      Lucy Bremner

STARTING LINE UP:
Otene GS, Inkster GA, Page WA, White C, Hemi WD, Beazley-Tango GD, Warren GK.

BENCH:

Lendrum, O’Malley, Bilton, Spence.

Horrendous conditions for netball with pounding rain throughout the match, despite this the game was fast paced.  The first quarter was dominated by Ardmore’s shooters who set the pace but Inkster kept us within reach with perfect scoring 11 from 11.  At the first quarter whistle the score was 15 - 19 to Ardmore.

Bilton came on at WA and Spence at WD, this added more defensive pressure through the mid court and allowed Aztec to use good ball and claw back the margin.  Another good performance in the shooting circle and the half time score was 28 - 29 to Ardmore.

Water-logged players re-took the court at half-time with O’Malley coming on at GS, Lendrum at WD, Spence moved to GD and Beazley-Tango to GK.  Aztec dominated this 15 minute period and Beazley-Tango achieved some crucial turnover ball in the circle which was well-used by attack.  O’Malley struggled to find the hoop in the heavy rain but the rebounding in the shooting end thankfully kept the ball at our end.  Bilton and White built on their combination in the 2nd quarter and were feeding good ball into the circle throughout this quarter. With one quarter remaining Aztec had puttled ahead by 7. 42 - 35 to Aztec

Beazley-Tango was rested and Warren came on at GD with Spence moving to GK.  Another tough tussle in the last 15 minutes with all 4 shooters dropping their accuracy with the heavy rain playing it’s part.  Each team was breaking the other’s centre pass throughout and the lead was being slowly clawed back by Ardmore.  A lot more whistle in this quarter at our attack end.  Aztec ended up triumphant with a 4 goal difference and hard fought win 50 - 46.

Another closely contested victory for the girls. Let’s hope the weather is better next week!

Otene GS, Inkster GA, Page WA, White C, Hemi WD, Spence GD, Beazley-Tango GK.

BENCH:
Lendrum, O’Malley, Bilton, Warren.

Coach Wendy Bremner was in Wellington for work this week and is grateful to Vaivasa Fatialofa for taking the team tonight and for the report

Aztec lost the first centre pass, and took a couple of minutes to get into the game, but once settled found our rhythm and opened up the court, giving good space for the ball to come down to our shooters. Our feeders did a good job getting the ball to them.Otene was a little tentative in the circle but Inkster had the rebounds covered and there was good movement with Otene running the base really well, and Inkster front cutting through the top of the circle nicely.  Defensively, they worked really hard on their own players, at times we let our opposition have a bit too much room to run around - but when we chose to give them less space we restricted a lot better. 1st quarter score:  8 - 8 Draw

No changes in the second quarter - Our feeders weren't getting onto the edge of the circle as much, which forced a few stray passes when feeding . Page worked hard to get the ball at the centre pass, and came through to help when needed bringing the ball down from our defensive end.  Our attackers, worked their angles a bit more, and it really worked for us, however anything aerial was eaten up by their defence. Defensively, our back two (GK & GD) though successful occasionally, were finding it a bit difficult to get ball from the tall shooter. Hemi was a little rocket, there for any intercept worth a look.  They scored two more goals than us 11-13 taking the 1/2 time score to 19 - 21 to HHK

Still in grading we wanted to make sure all the players got some court time, so brought Warren on at GD, Lendrum at WD, Bilton to WA and O’Malley to GS. We were a little guilty of waiting for the ball to come to us, rather than taking our feet to the ball giving the opposition enough time to take a few intercepts. Warren opted to hang back to help put pressure on the tall shooter, but unfortunately it didn’t have the desired affect in this instance.  Lendrum had an awesome game sticking to her WA with her uncanny defensive style awesome to watch! O’Malley came on well, shot well and worked good with Inkster. Bilton and White continued to work hard but at times lost sight of where each other were. Unfortunately this third quarter really cost us because we failed to drive onto the ball, and were a bit too loose on defence. We ended up with a 6 goal difference in this quarter as they converted their attempts to points but we only managed to sink half of ours. ( 7-13). Third quarter score  26 - 34 to HHK

Going into the final quarter we made one change with Spence back on at GD . Heads were down, but the girls fought hard defensively right to the final whistle. Spence and Beazley-Tango gave everything in the air a go.  On attack we threw a few balls out the back, and were still a bit guilty of waiting for the ball to come to us. But the players worked a lot harder to get themselves onto the top of the circle to feed their shooters. The whole team worked hard together and when the basics were done, it worked well for us.  A drawn quarter again with 13 goals a piece in a fast paced final 15 minutes.  Final Score Aztec Two defeated 39 - 47 by Hui Hui Kotahi

Overall, although it was a loss - we have lots to take from that game, two drawn quarters and one the difference of a break.  We need to maintain consistency in all periods of play and have loads of potential.  As each player learns about strengths and weaknesses of the other and builds on combinations we can only get stronger..

MATCH:        Aztec 2          v             Marist 1

DATE:          Wednesday 14/3/12

RESULT:      Aztec won 56 - 51

TEAM:
Alison White, Ariana Page, Chelsea Bilton, Josephine Otene, Luana Beazley-Tango, Ngamira Warren, Nicola O’Malley, Sara Lendrum, Sarah Inkster, Shaiann Hemi, Tracey Spence

COACH:  Wendy Bremner                                MANAGER:  Lucy Bremner

STARTING LINE UP:
O’Malley GS, Inkster GA, Page WA, White C, Bilton WD, Warren GD, Spence GK.

BENCH:
Otene, Beazley-Tango, Lendrum, Hemi.

The first quarter was fast paced. Inkster was strong in the circle however O’Malley struggled with her accuracy. Aztec managed to maintain possession through some strong defensive work by Spence and Bilton achieving turnovers at crucial moments. After 15 minutes there was only one goal separating the teams. First 1/4 Score:  11 - 10 Aztec

Bilton moved to attack, Beazley-Tango came on at GD and Hemi came on at WD. A much stronger quarter by O’Malley who found the hoop 9 times from 13 attempts, well supported by perfect shooting goal attack Inkster 6 from 6. Beazley-Tango had an immediate impact achieving 5 intercepts. Spence maintained her first quarter form and continued to put pressure on the Marist shooters. By half time the gap had widened slightly to 3. 1/2 Time Score 26 - 23 Aztec

Inkster moved to GS, Bilton to GA, Page came back on at WA, Lendrum came on at WD, and Otene at GD with Beazley-tango moving back to GK, the only unchanged position in this quarter was White at C. The fresh legs added more speed and the pace lifted in the 3rd quarter. Inkster was outstanding with a perfect shooting effort again scoring 13 from 13 with Bilton adding options and scoring 6 from 10. White and Page worked hard feeding the ball into their shooters and Lendrum achieved two key intercepts. Missed attempts by Marist shooters were gobbled up by Beazley-Tango and the gap increased by another 5 to 8. 3rd Quarter Score:  45 - 37 Aztec

Bremner was keen for each player to have at least a half game in this initial game. OMalley came back on to GS, Hemi moved to WA, Warren came on at GK. Lendrum worked hard again intercepting two balls for much needed turnovers. Physicality increased in the last quarter as did unforced errors. Just before the end of the final quarter White had to leave the court through injury and Page came back on at WA with Hemi moving to C. This quarter was quite messy and ball was at times squandered by Aztec. Marist took full advantage clawing back the lead by breaking our centre pass twice and reducing the gap to 5 at the final whistle.

Nice to get the first game of the season under our belt. Good skills were displayed, it was fast paced with a high score rate and closely contested. It augurs well for the season ahead and we look forward to next week’s match.

MATCH:   Aztec Prem 1                v                     Verdettes

VENUE:    Fraser High, Hamilton                            TIME:             8.00pm

WON BY:  Verdettes                                             RESULT:        40 / 48

Aztec was looking forward to finally getting their first game of the season underway – and it showed, with a strong full team effort which enabled them to draw the first quarter.
1st quarter score:   10 – 10

Aztec did not make any changes through the first quarter, Coach Winnie Hauraki pleased with her starting line ups first quarter effort.  Dannielle Steffany dominated the circle & new recruit Patria Harris worked hard to provide quality ball for her shooters.

Aztec struggled at times with their timing, an expected hiccup while new links and combinations took time to solidify, handing Verdettes the lead at half time.
½ time score: 18 – 23 Verdettes

The 3rd quarter saw Coach Hauraki make changes to bring on new comer Valentina Fesolai, regaining the team unity which went missing in the 2nd quarter.  This worked a treat, with Aztec taking the 3rd quarter by 2 goals, and closing the gap to within 3 goals.

Returning defender Deidre Otene was rock solid, providing her defensive unit with plenty of turnovers to capitalise on.  Shanna Coetzee worked tirelessly to regain any loose balls that came her way, and ably assisted her team mates.   ¾ score:  30 – 33 Verdettes

Coach Hauraki also introduced new comer Stephanie Campbell but despite their gallant efforts Aztec was not able to achieve a win for the first game of their Super12 campaign, going down to Verdettes by 8 goals in the end.

Coach Hauraki said after the game “Really pleased at this first hit out tonight, we have a new team unit to work with this season - and I thought they did really well.  The game was ours for the taking we just needed to widen our vision at times & keep our composure.”
