MATCH: Aztec 2 v Bombay
DATE: 13.07.12 RESULT: 34 - 59 Bombay
TEAM:
Alison White, Ariana Page, Chelsea Bilton, Ngamira Warren, Nicola O’Malley, Sara Lendrum, Sarah Inkster, Shaiann Hemi, Terri Anne Paea, Tracey Spence, Lucy Bremner, Mary Jane Ale
COACH: Wendy Bremner MANAGER: Josephine Otene
STARTING LINE UP:
Inkster GS, Bilton GA, Page WA, White C, Ale WD, Warren GD Spence GK.
BENCH:
Hemi, O’Malley, Lendrum, Bremner, Paea (injured)
An improved starting performance from Aztec who were staying goal for goal until the last few minutes of this quarter when we let Bombay pull ahead with a 4 goal run taking them into the lead at the first quarter whistle 14-10 Bombay
No changes by Aztec but Bombay switched their defenders around and bought on a new centre as the teams started the 2nd period of play. Aztec managed to stay goal for goal again for the first 8 centre passes of this quarter. Some ill-timed passes squandered possession allowing Bombay to get a run of 4 goals in a row to increase their lead to 6 when Spence injured her calf muscle and had to leave the court. Lendrum was full of the flu but came on to replace the injured Spence and Bombay scored the next 3 goals before we settled and scored from our next centre pass. The half time score had Bombay in front by 11.
Half time Score: 18 - 29 Bombay
At the 3rd quarter Ale was moved to GD and Hemi to WD. Bombay made wholesale changes with new players in every position. Despite some great speed and vision at the defensive end by White, Hemi and Ale we struggled at our attacking end to get the ball into our shooters. Their confidence dropped too and with that their accuracy. Bombay completely dominated this quarter scoring 19 goals to our 4.
Third Quarter Score: 48 - 22 Bombay
Bremner came on at WA, Page moved to C, Warren to GK and Bombay made 3 changes. Aztec took a few centre passes to settle into the new combinations but then were much quicker to release the ball in this period of play. The shooters were also following in their shots and rebounding their missed attempts. We had scored 7 to their 6 in this final quarter when Bremner had to call time for her legs. White came on at WA. We managed to keep the momentum going to the final whistle to win the last quarter by 1, 12-11. A decisive victory to Bombay by 25 goals but a much improved last quarter by Aztec.
MATCH: Aztec 2 v Timbertown Shelly Park
DATE: 15/06/12 RESULT: 31 - 71 Timbertown Shelly Park Won
TEAM:
Alison White, Ariana Page, Chelsea Bilton, , Luana Beazley-Tango, Ngamira Warren, Nicola O’Malley, Sara Lendrum, Sarah Inkster, Shaiann Hemi, Terri Anne Paea, Tracey Spence, Lucy Bremner
COACH: Wendy Bremner MANAGER: Josephine Otene
STARTING LINE UP:
Inkster GS, Page GA, Paea WA, White C, Lendrum WD, Bilton GD Spence GK.
BENCH:
Bremner, Warren, O’Malley ABSENT: Beazley-Tango, Hemi
Another tough match tonight for Aztec 2. We were down by 4 goals 8 minutes into the game and playing catch-up netball. Spence called injury for a torn thumb nail and after a quick repair we scored 3 goals in a row to get within 2 but then allowed Timbertown to pull ahead again. They had 20 attempts at goal in the first 15 minutes while we had only put up 7 shots. Even though Inkster was accurate shooting 7 from 7, the inability of our attacking unit to get the ball to the post was an issue, as the defenders for Timbertown gathered in the ball being fed into our shooters and turned it into points.
First quarter Score: 7 - 16 Timbertown
One change with Bremner coming off the bench to WA for Aztec and Timbertown’s shooters swapped bibs
This quarter saw us score 6 goals to Timbertowns 4 in the first 10 centre passes when there was an injury break called by Bremner. After the break the momentum shifted and Timbertown took control again, scoring the next 11 goals before we found the post in the last few minutes of this quarter. They had put up 24 shots to our 16 and increased the lead by another 10 goals to be in front by 19 at half time.
Half time Score: 14 - 33 Timbertown
Warren came on at GD with Bilton out to WD. We had no answer to the skilful attacking play of Timbertown and found it difficult to get the ball into Page and Inkster who managed to only turn to the post 7 times in the 15 minutes. Bremner called injury time halfway through this quarter and Paea was brought back on to WA and Lendrum replaced Bilton at WD. The gap had widened at the end of the third to a massive 30 goals.
Third quarter Score: 21 - 51 Timbertown
Bilton went back on at GD and the final quarter started with each team scoring 5 goals a piece and being much more closely contested. This was short-lived however and Timbertown again took control dominating the entire court, intercepting passes in the mid-court and those being fed into the shooters by Aztec. We were limited to 11 attempts in the quarter compared to 26 at the other end. The game ended with a definitive victory by Timbertown 71-31.
Aztec struggled from the starting whistle to get the ball into the shooting circle, we were punished at every opportunity when we failed to go to the ball or get in front on attack and our defence were unable to gather it back at the other end. Timbertown had a massive 61 more attempts at goal than we did. So even though our accuracy was 86% compared to their 73%, it had little impact in this extremely fast-paced game (133 attempts at goal in 60 minutes is rapid netball). Possession is everything and we didn’t give ourselves enough of it.
MATCH: Aztec 2 v Mellons Bay 2
DATE: Friday, 29th June 2012 RESULT: 23 - 52 Mellons Bay 2
TEAM:
Alison White, Ariana Page, Chelsea Bilton, Ngamira Warren, Nicola O’Malley, Sara Lendrum, Sarah Inkster, Shaiann Hemi, Terri Anne Paea, Tracey Spence, Lucy Bremner, Mary Jane Ale
COACH: Wendy Bremner MANAGER: Josephine Otene
STARTING LINE UP:
Inkster GS, O’Malley GA, Bremner WA, Page C, Ale WD, Lendrum GD Spence GK.
BENCH:
White, Warren, Paea, Hemi, Bilton (Absent)
Without a specialist GA we have struggled in the RPL plate round and with Bilton overseas tonight and White with the flu we had extra pressure on the girls. We started off hesitant and failed to sink the first attempt and the ball went up and down the court a few times before Mellons broke. It set the tone for the game and we struggled to find our shooters. Squandered possession hard earnt by our defenders gave away our opportunities to stay within touch. The quarter was slipping away from us and so was Page’s shoe as it came off. Another turn over and we were now 4 goals behind 4-8. Bremner called injury time and came off, Page moved to WA and White went on at centre. O’Malley had failed to find form in the quarter so she too came off to be replaced by Warren in an unfamiliar role in the attacking circle. Mellons consolidated their position and scored another 3 goals to finish the first quarter in front by 7.
First quarter score: 4 - 11 Mellons Bay
Spence moved to GA and Warren to GK as the 2nd quarter commenced, Mellons made no changes throughout the game. We seemed to have more options in this quarter at the attacking end but still only had one shooter putting up shots. Ale was hunting and gained 3 intercepts in this quarter and Lendrum 2 rebounds. Inkster scored 9 from 11 attempts but Mellons had 2 shooters turning to the post and scored 13 from 18 between them increasing the lead by another 4 to take the half time score to 13 - 24 Mellons Bay
Spence went back to GK and Page went to GA and Hemi to WA. This didn’t work at all as we failed to get the ball into our circle again, struggling to find the circle edge to feed and despite White and Ale intercepting the ball three times in this quarter we just were completely outplayed. Mellons put up 19 shots to our 7 and scored 16 to our 3. It was like the girls were shell shocked in this quarter. An extremely disappointing quarter that allowed Mellons to more than double their lead to 24.
Third quarter score: 16 - 40 to Mellons Bay
Bremner came on at GA, Page went back to WA and Paea came on at C with Warren returning to GK. The girls are to be admired for keeping their heads up in this quarter and staying goal for goal for the first 10 minutes of this final period of play. We had the same number of attempts at goal as Mellons for the first time in the game, but the pressure of being the only specialist shooter was showing on Inkster and her accuracy dropped to 50% as she scored 7 from 14. Mellons scored another 12 and ended the game with a decisive victory 23 - 52.
We had defeated Mellons earlier in the RPL tournament and the result tonight was extremely disappointing. However if you don’t have at least 2 specialist shooters who are on form in your team at this level of netball you will be punished. We hope to reverse the result when we meet next time.
MATCH: Aztec 2 v Manurewa Rugby Gold
VENUE: Rosehill College DATE: Friday 8/6/12
RESULT: 23 - 59 Manurewa Rugby Gold Won
TEAM:
Alison White, Ariana Page, Chelsea Bilton, Luana Beazley-Tango, Ngamira Warren, Nicola O’Malley, Sara Lendrum, Sarah Inkster, Shaiann Hemi, Terri Anne Paea, Tracey Spence, Lucy Bremner
COACH: Wendy Bremner MANAGER: Josephine Otene
STARTING LINE UP:
O’Malley GS, Inkster GA, Page WA, White C, Lendrum WD, Spence GD Beazley-Tango GK
BENCH:
Bilton, Hemi, Bremner, Warren Injured: Paea
We struggled from the starting whistle to get the ball into the shooting circle as our shooters looked hesitant and weren’t stepping forward into the ball, finding it difficult to get in-front to present a target or hold space in the circle. There were a lot of turnovers at each end as the teams settled in the match before the first few goals were scored. The score was 2-3 when Beazley-Tango called injury time. O’Malley was replaced by Bilton at GS and Spence swapped places with Beazley-Tango in the defensive circle. Aztec however continued to struggle to retain possession or find space and their shooters. Manurewa Rugby scored 7 goals before we netted a goal after 3 missed attempts. Bilton, usually a player to bring calm and confidence to the court struggled with the tight defence and couldn’t find her rhythm. It was catch-up netball from now and panic had begun to set in. By the end of the first 15 minutes Manurewa Rugby were ahead by 9.
First quarter Score: 4 - 13 Manurewa Rugby Gold
We had come from behind in the past against this team and we were keen for the players who had started to go back on and get the game under control. (Beazley-Tango and Spence swapped back to their starting positions the rest stayed the same from when injury was called in the 1st quarter). Unfortunately the opposite happened. We managed to only get the ball into our shooting circle 6 times from our 12 centre passes in this quarter and only 4 of these found the net. We concerned ourselves with things beyond our control, were in each other’s space and playing reactive netball, squandering hard earnt possession and making panicked decisions. Manurewa on the other hand were building on their momentum, sinking the goals at pace, scoring an incredible 19 from 23 attempts. The Aztec girls seemed completely shell-shocked, they had no answer to the pace and physicality and came off the court at half time with a deficit of 24.
Half time Score: 8 - 32 to Manurewa Rugby Gold
Spence was moved to the shooting end with Bilton out to GA, Bremner came on at WA, Hemi at WD, Warren at GD - White and Beazley-Tango stayed in their starting positions. Aztec started strong with much more control and scored goal for goal for the first 8 centre passes of this quarter. Spence was creating space in the circle and Bremner was seeing the passes into the shooters. Hemi was hunting and putting pressure on the Manurewa's mid-court attackers. Unfortunately our overall confidence was down and we struggled with our accuracy. Manurewa managed to break our centre pass again twice and Aztec didn’t seem to be able to catch a break. The third quarter was much more closely contested with a deficit of only 5. The margin had increased to 29.
Third Quarter Score: 17 - 46 to Manurewa Rugby Gold
One change, Bilton who had been heavily penalised throughout the game, came off replaced by Inkster at GA. Manurewa started strong. After 2 centre passes they called injury time when one of their players hit the deck at the slippery end of the court. No changes were made. 4 more centre passes and Bremner had to come off for injury after a collision in the mid-court. Page came on at WA. Manurewa had scored 5 and Aztec 1. Despite a couple of great intercepts and tips by White, Hemi, Warren and Beazley-Tango, we failed to win this final period of play. Manurewa ended the match with a decisive 36 goal victory.
Final Score: 23 - 59 to Manurewa Rugby Gold
The previous two times we have met this season we finished within 1 goal of each other. Tonight was a different story altogether. You can say the start time, 8pm on a Friday at the end of a busy week, an extremely slippery floor, lights and a hot gym, unfamiliarity with inside games for some of our first timers, the increased physicality, contributed to our poor performance. However, all of these things are outside our control and we didn’t make the most of the opportunities we had. We failed to treasure the ball, we were hesitant to put up shots and inaccurate, our mid-court struggled to find space and played reactive netball and our defenders were unable to stop the ball getting into Manurewa’s shooters who were finishing well. They put up 32 more shots than we did. Lots to work on over the next week before our second RPL match.
However, there was a positive from the match and that was we had a much better 2nd half and kept our heads up till the final whistle.
MATCH: Aztec 2 v Mangere Hawks
DATE: 22/06/12 RESULT: 44 - 53 Mangere Hawks
TEAM:
Alison White, Ariana Page, Chelsea Bilton, Luana Beazley-Tango, Ngamira Warren, Nicola O’Malley, Sara Lendrum, Sarah Inkster, Shaiann Hemi, Terri Anne Paea, Tracey Spence, Lucy Bremner
COACH: Wendy Bremner MANAGER: Josephine Otene
STARTING LINE UP:
Inkster GS, O’Malley GA, Page WA, White C, Paea WD, Spence GD Warren GK.
BENCH:
Bremner, Bilton, Hemi, Lendrum, Beazley-Tango (absent)
We knew Hawks had defeated Manurewa Rugby last week so it was going to be a tough contest tonight. The game started quite messy with both teams taking time to settle into their rhythm and it was a hectic pace. Hawks took command in the beginning minutes and pulled ahead with a couple of breaks to be in front by 5 after 17 centre passes. Hawks had dominated possession in this first quarter, turning to the post 20 times to our 8, so even though our accuracy was higher our opportunities to net the ball were less. O’Malley took a knock to the face and called time with a bleeding nose. Spence had injured her Achilles simultaneously and some changes were required. Bilton came off the bench to GA and Lendrum to GD. The new combinations took a few minutes to settle in and there was only time for 4 more centre passes in this quarter before time was called. Mangere Hawks had increased their lead to 6.
First quarter score: 7 - 13 Hawks
We kept the players in the positions they had finished in and Hawks made no changes either. The second quarter had more control and Aztec started to play their own game more. We had managed to break Hawks centre pass twice and looked like we were gaining momentum but a couple of stray passes in the midcourt and ill-disciplined breaks squandered hard earnt possession. Hawks fought back scoring the next 3 goals before we refocused and settled again. We got some great defensive turn overs as White and Paea were putting pressure on the feed into the circle and Lendrum and Warren hunting the ball at every opportunity, resulting in 6 deflections and intercepts. Inkster was shooting well with a perfect result this quarter 9 from 9 and Bilton sunk 3 from 6 attempts. The feeders were finding their shooters well. Aztec won this quarter by 4, 12-8 and reduced the lead to 2.
Half time score: 19 - 21 Hawks
Bremner came on at WA and Hemi at WD, no other changes. Hawks brought on a new WD. Inkster had another solid quarter sinking 9 from 10 and Bilton was successful 6 from 9. Hawks scored 14 from 19. Bremner took a few minutes to settle then was finding the feed into Bilton or Inkster well. Hemi was strong and fast on defence and gained 4 intercepts in this period of play. Both she and Lendrum provided great back up support at the attacking end allowing options for reset when the feed was pressured. We let them break our centre pass a few times at the beginning and end of this quarter but on the whole treasured possession well, winning this quarter 15-14. Going into the final quarter the lead had reduced to 1.
Third quarter score: 34 - 35 Hawks
Bremner came off with injury replaced by Page at WA. No other changes by Aztec but Hawks made a change to their GD and WD. Hawks took control at the beginning of this final period of play and faced the post 24 times to our 14. Possession is everything and they managed to turn it into points, securing a win by 9 goals after winning this quarter by 8. Final score: 44 - 53 Hawks
Both teams won 2 quarters each and this was another fast-paced, skilful game. Hawks put up 20 more shots at goal than we did 76 - 56 and Inkster’s accuracy kept us in the game. Crucial turnovers in the 1st and last quarters to work on but we look forward to an improved full 60 minute performance when we face off against Hawks again in the second round.
MATCH: Aztec 2 v Ardmore ABs
DATE: Saturday 26/5/12 RESULT: 46 - 44 Aztec won
TEAM:
Alison White, Ariana Page, Chelsea Bilton, , Luana Beazley-Tango, Ngamira Warren, Nicola O’Malley, Sara Lendrum, Sarah Inkster, Shaiann Hemi, Terri Anne Paea, Tracey Spence, Lucy Bremner
COACH: Wendy Bremner MANAGER: Josephine Otene (absent)
STARTING LINE UP:
Bilton GS, Inkster GA, Page WA, White C, Lendrum WD, Spence GD Beazley-Tango GK
BENCH: O’Malley, Hemi, Paea, Bremner, Warren (absent)
Aztec started strong scoring 8 to 5 from the first 13 centre passes. Ardmore called injury time and made some changes to their players on court. Aztec then scored 8 to 3 in the remaining time of the first quarter and finished with a lead of 8. Bilton and Inkster rebounded well in the circle and the defence and Centre worked hard to hunt down ball, gaining 7 tips or intercepts and 2 rebounds in this first period of play. Page was swift off the transverse and to the top of the circle and the team were working with a lot of trust and confidence.
First quarter score: 16 - 8 Aztec
White’s legs were sore so she came off and Hemi took the centre bib. Aztec continued to dominate possession with lots of work from Lendrum, Spence and Beazley-Tango gaining ball and allowing the attack to make the most of it.
Half time score: 27 - 18 Aztec
Bremner came on at WA, Paea at WD, White back to C, and Lendrum to GD. Ardmore came out strong in the beginning of this quarter putting pressure on the attacking end and finishing off effectively in the shooting circle. Physicality increased and our shooters were spending quite a bit of time on the ground. Paea rolled her knee and called injury time. Hemi came on to take the WD bib. Ardmore lifted their game and the amount of whistle increased in the second half of this quarter. Ardmore scored 8 to our 4 reducing the lead to 5.
Third quarter score: 36 - 31 Aztec
O’Malley took the GS bib and Bilton moved out to GA, Page came back on at WA, and Lendrum went into GK with Spence coming back on at GD. We allowed Ardmore to score the first 2 goals before we got our rhythm back and increased the gap back to 6. This however was only short lived as Ardmore rallied and scored the final 4 goals bringing them within 2 at the final whistle 46 - 44 to Aztec.
So we end the Presidents round with three wins against, Ardmore ABs, Ardmore 1, Hui Hui Kotahi, a bonus point from our 1 point loss to Manurewa Rugby and a loss to Generations A great competitive 5 weeks of netball.
